Relaxing Day in Poulsbo

Beautiful day again. Sunshine and temperature in high 60s.

We went to "downtown Poulsbo" for lunch and then walked in/out of stores. Pleasant time with a few purchases.

Alison called to tell me they arrived back in NY, but not without a major mishap in Seattle. Somehow, she lost her wallet between the time she got out of the taxi (from the hospital)at the airport and when she went to check in for her flight. A report was made to the Seattle police, hoping that she might get it back. Annoying part is having to cancel credit cards, get new driver's license, new membership cards, new health cards, etc. There was a lot of money in the wallet, too. I told her most important is that everyone is ok. She said Ben is doing ok but she will take him to his doctor. What an end to a special vacation.

Cruise over -- Arrival in Seattle

We arrived at Pier 66 sometime during the very early morning. Steve and I decided to have an early breakfast at the Garden Cafe before disembarkation. We wanted to leave as early as possible, hoping to avoid the crowds and long lines. We went down to Deck 7 and joined the LONG line of passengers who had the same idea.

Had to hand our NCL room card to be swiped for the last time and then walked down to the building. Someone looked at our passports and I handed in the Declaration form. All done! Steve thought we'd catch a bus to take us to Pier 52 for our ride on the ferry to Bainbridge. Instead we walked the distance betweent the piers, dragging our suitcases and the bags of "stuff" that we purchased. (We're planning to ship a lot home since we're carrying on our suitcases.)

Once we boarded the ferry, I called Barb to let her know. Also called Evan during the ride. Barb and Ron picked us up at the ferry terminal. Went directly to their house and spent the rest of the day there.

Spoke to Alison and found out Ben had fallen on the ship and they were going to the hospital. After doing some tests (negative results), they said they wanted to keep him overnight for observation. Alison is going to stay there with him. They're scheduled to fly back to NY tomorrow.

Saturday, May 23 -- Cruising and Evening Stop in Victoria

Changed our watches back to Pacific Time. Went to bed late so didn’t get up very early. David called and then he and Ben stopped by for the charged batteries and to drop off the walkie-talkies. (We didn’t use them on the trip but will get familiar with them for the future.)

Breakfast at 9:50 in Garden Café. No smoked salmon (Did they run out of it?) so I had a veggie omelet. I stopped at Reception to pick up form for NCL Port Shopping Buyer’s Guarantee (30-day protection for purchases made at merchants listed on Alaska shopping maps that NCL gave us) and looked in shops as we walked to Stardust Theater for Disembarkation Talk with Your Cruise Director Simon, arriving early so listened to/watched the end of Virtual Look at the Ship – Hosted by Your Captain. After listening to Simon, we decided to be off the ship at 8AM tomorrow (beat the rush and get to Bainbridge Ferry early). We thought about Room Service for breakfast but decided to go up to Garden Café at 7AM instead. (More choice than room service.)

Back to the room to fill out the Buyer’s Guarantee and Custom Declaration form. We have to include items purchased from ship’s Tax Free/Duty Free shops and anything purchased in Victoria. (Good that I didn’t have to include any jewelry we bought because I’d be way over the amount allowed.) I also filled out a form telling them what a great job Jenna did and how helpful she was to me.

Steve took a nap and I went back to Reception to hand in the forms. (I picked up a preliminary bill.) There was a large jewelry display in the Crystal Atrium where I purchased a few pendants. They gave me a raffle entry which I dropped off in the shop. (Was told the drawing would be at 2:15PM and that person must be present to win.)

Put them away in the room and went upstairs to check out the view. Called Alison, picked up a couple of apples (one for me and one for Ben) and went to her cabin to visit. Alison told me she WON in the Casino last night so did a little better than breaking even on her gambling time. They went to lunch and I went back to my cabin.

I had to pick up the Ulu knives from Security at 2PM, so I went early. They were very nice about letting me have them early so I was able to get them to the cabin and go to the shop for the drawing results. (Steve went to Stardust Theater to get us seats for the 2:45PM International Crew Show Featuring “Fountains,”) I DID NOT win. Oh, well. Show was very good with talented people. After the show, we went to the Bliss Ultra Lounge to check it out. Steve decided not to participate in the show. (In our opinion, the venue is not a good one for it.)

We went to Great Outdoors for some food (didn’t have lunch earlier). We went outside to enjoy the sunshine. Steve took a nap and I went to Deck 14 to watch our arrival into Victoria.
We docked next to the Star Princess. Watched Holland ship coming in after us.

I decided to go out onto the dock even though we weren’t planning to go downtown. (Been there…done that… last year with Barb and Ron.) Alison, David, Ben, and Edward were queuing up for a taxi to go downtown. Talked with them until they left. There was a gift shop on the dock so, of course, we had to go in to look. Yes, I did buy some things.

We went back on the ship and decided to go to the Garden Café for something to drink. Hmmm… Should have just had a drink. Instead we had dessert and a cappuccino. Followed that with food. I’ve often said that dinner should start with dessert. Not the healthiest eating but I know I’ll be back to my portion-sized meals soon enough.

We picked up our free postcards at the Photo Shop and decided it was time to go back to the cabin. I left a phone message for Alison to let her know we would be in our cabin for the rest of the evening. We’re packing while we watch Quantum of Solace on TV.

The weather on this trip has been much better than we expected. Sunny EVERY DAY. Only cold time was when we were in Glacier Bay.

Up early tomorrow… breakfast at 7AM… planning to disembark ship at 8AM. Taxi to Pier for Bainbridge Ferry. I’ll call Barb when I know which ferry we’ll be on. Looking forward to spending time with her and Ron.

Friday, May 22 -- Early Shopping and Duck Tour in Sunny Ketchikan

We were planning to go our shortly after 6AM but “overslept” until 5:30AM. (Funny to think of that time as sleeping in…) Jenna told us that stores would be open at 6AM, but, when we went out about 6:45, few were open yet. I did look at the Bernard K Passman black coral art items (many in jewelry designs) stopped into Diamonds International for my free charm (last one). Picked up a free pendant at Treasures of Alaska. At Royal Jewelers, I asked to see the Omega (14K gold on one side and silver on other) necklaces. Bought one (with a free topaz slide), a snake chain (for my charms), and a lovely Northern Lights (Brazilian topaz) bracelet. After I handed the paper for a free pendant at Effy Jewelers, I looked at the Diversa earrings. (Versatile with the ability to wear them either as posts or dangling.) I bought a pair with blue diamonds. The salesperson showed me a Diversa ring, “just for fun.” (I think there’s a special language for jewelers that includes the “just for fun” term to get someone to purchase more.) The ring can be white diamonds or blue with just a simple flipping over of the middle section. When I said it was more money than I wanted to spend, they started lowering the price. We said we’d think about it and maybe return to the store later. Another stop in Diamonds International to see (and price) an ammolite slider convinced me that it was too expensive for hanging on the Omega. Steve suggested we go back to Bernard Passman to buy a unique coral piece that could be worn with the Omega. (Purchased a pretty heart that is a signed piece… a work of art.) Back to Effy Jewelers for the ring. (Unique and something that can be worn often.) Quick visit to Del Sol for a pair of sunglasses and another free tote bag.

We rushed back to the ship to drop off the purchases, use the facilities, and back outside to get on the Duck Boat for our special land/water tour. (Alison, Ben, and Edward went, too.) Purchased a duck whistle so blew it each time the guide made an outlandish remark. Enjoyed the ride.

When we returned to the dock, Steve returned to the ship for a rehearsal for the Guest Talent Show, but it seemed the show was cancelled because the band manager in charge was “let go” by NCL this morning for unspecified reasons, and he had all the relevant information. (Instead, the few participants who didn’t need the band would be part of a Karaoke program tomorrow night.) Went for a walk with Alison, Ben, and Edward. (They went on the Duck Boat, too.) We went to Julie’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts where I purchased a totem (for my travel memories curio cabinet) and an Ulu (knife) that came with a DVD (and free sharpener). Time to return to the ship for departure. I had to leave the Ulu with the ship’s personnel (safety reasons?), but will get it tomorrow afternoon.

Steve was in the cabin when I returned so we went to the Garden Café for lunch. (We didn’t have breakfast this morning… no time…left too early.)

In the afternoon, we enjoyed You Just Have to Laugh with David Naster in the Stardust Theater. A stop into the shop for small purchases (stuffed monkey, keychain, and magnetic bracelet). While we were in the Blue Lagoon for snack (tomato soup, shared tuna melt sandwich, and cheese cake), David stopped by and joined us.

Back in the cabin, I called Alison to find out about the portrait pictures we all wanted to have taken. She said to meet them in the Crystal Atrium (Deck 7) at 6PM. We arrived before them so got in line. (Timing worked out well.) Small amount to eat at the Garden Café before going to the Stardust Theater for the 7:15PM Garden of the Geisha show (Jean Ann Ryan Company featuring flying acrobatics), followed by a farewell performance of NCL Pearl officers, staff, and crew.

With time before the 10PM Chocoholic Buffet, we went back to the cabin. I organized many of my purchases (won’t have to do that tomorrow night) and changed my clothes to more comfy, casual. I thought there would be an opportunity to take pictures of the Buffet, so went up 20 minutes early. They had the doors closed so we joined the line waiting. Ate more than I should have (hard to resist). Walked to the Spinnaker Lounge to watch The Liar’s Club (starring Cruise Director Simon, Comedian David Naster, and Snakebait team of Sean and Max), a very entertaining show of adult humor. It was well-attended but I managed to get a stool to sit on.

Tomorrow – forecast for partly cloudy 70F – Victoria arrival at 6PM
Nothing special planned for Victoria. Will probably take a walk. We were there last year with Barb and Ron so familiar to us.

Thursday, May 21 -- Glacier Bay --- A Picture Postcard Place

Alarm went off at 6AM and I got up to take a shower so I’d be dressed before room service delivery. It arrived early just as I got out of the shower. They won’t leave it outside the room so I threw on t-shirt and shorts and opened the door to take the tray. Simple, but filling, breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, ½ a muffin, and ½ a roll was good enough for me. David called about getting his batteries and then stopped by. I went up to the Spinnaker Lounge about 7:10 AM and joined the early-risers at the “Ranger Chat” with introductory info about Glacier Bay. I joined Alaska Geographic so received a nice tote bag, pin, and some info. (Will receive their magazine and have discounts at some National Parks. One discount is at the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Museums in Hyde Park.) They gave me a map so I could see our route through Glacier Bay National Park.

As we entered the Park, I took some pics from Spinnaker, but knew I’d get better ones if I went outside. It was about 46 degrees so I returned to the cabin to bundle up.

Steve and I went to the 13th deck and had a great view as we sailed into the beautiful areas to see the glaciers. The captain stopped the ship so we were able to watch some calving of the glacier. The weather was clear (later sunny), something that was unexpected.

About 10AM, we decided to get something to eat at the Garden Café (lox/bagel/cream cheese, yogurt, and fruit for me). We sat with two women from Monroe (NY). Had a nice conversation with them. After breakfast, we were back outside to look at the second glacier of the morning. Lots of video and photos taken today!

Lunch at Garden Café. (We eat there often. No waiting and plenty of food choices for us.) Afterwards, Steve went back to the cabin to shower and I decided to listen to one of the Rangers who was speaking in the Stardust Theater about glaciers. I went back outside and spent some time with Alison, Ben, David, and Edward. Much warmer than earlier so I didn’t have to wear my fleece. About 3:10PM, I went back to the Stardust Theater to attend Ketchikan Port & Shopping Talk (with Jenna). At the end of her talk, we received another charm (cruise ship). She gave out some more coupons for shopping tomorrow. A visit to the Trade Routes Boutique for Rum & Vodka Tasting for Steve and me. (Tasty, especially the rum that had a coconut flavoring added.)

Ate a light snack about 5PM at the Great Outdoors. (Not my best moment with soft-serve ice-cream, ½ tuna sandwich, tea, and then sharing sherbet.
Too much food!)

Dinner 6PM at the Indigo Restaurant with Alison, etc. (Salmon for my main course.) Knowing we have to be up early tomorrow, we decided to check out the early show (began at 7:15PM but we went there at 7:35PM) in the Stardust Theater. The Comedy Jugglers Sharkbait were entertaining. It was definitely a good idea to go then since the second show doesn’t begin until 9:15PM.

Tomorrow … Ketchikan …Temperatures in high 50s
We’re going on the Duck Tour shortly after 10AM, so will have to do our shopping earlier. We’ll probably leave the ship shortly after 6AM to have time to browse and shop. Stores open at 5:30AM. (Stores open as soon as the cruise ships dock and close after the ships leave.)

Wednesday, May 20 -- Shopping in Skagway

When we woke up, the ship was already docked in Skagway. We had no tours planned so decided to go walk around in the morning, return to ship for lunch, and then go back out to see what we missed in the morning.

Breakfast at Garden Café. David called before we went there (checking about the batteries I charged for him last night) so I arranged to meet him. He came in with Ben just after Steve and I found a table. Alison and Edward joined us soon after. Nice having some time together. We don’t see too much of each other some days as we each go our own way and do different activities.

After breakfast, Steve and I left the ship, walked the short distance to Broadway, and started looking around. We stopped in the Visitor Center and picked up free tickets for a 2PM ranger-guided tour. I took care of getting the freebies (another charm for bracelet from Diamonds International, a charm from Venetian Jewelers, a black water pearl from Goodmark Jewelers). Goodmark was the place that Jenna recommended for Alexandrite so we asked to see some pieces. They were all beautiful but not anything there that I was interested in getting. Steve suggested we get something that could go on my necklace but I didn’t see anything that would work. Coincidentally, Jenna was in the shop. (I think she adds a chip to the VIP cards so she can track us!) She suggested that maybe we could use a gold nugget piece. We talked with the salesperson about something that might work. (In the meantime, Steve and I were thinking about the cost, each coming up with a maximum amount we’d pay.) The Mark Henry Alexandrite is very rare (natural, color-changing feature with different lighting conditions). I was interested in it, especially since it is my birthstone. We arranged for the special setting and said we’d pick it up later in the afternoon.

We went back to the ship for a light lunch, Steve took a short nap, and I organized for going back out. We joined the tour but left when we realized it was going to be mostly standing around listening to the ranger. (I had downloaded/printed info about the area so we could use that if we wanted.) We walked into stores, using some discount coupons from the Alaska coupon book the cruise line gave us when we were boarding the ship in Seattle. We made some purchases (some to be mailed home when we’re in Poulbo) and picked up the new addition (Mark Henry Alexandrite mounted in a frame made of tiny gold nuggets) to my necklace, adding it to the necklace. When we go home, Steve will rearrange the other pieces so the Alexandrite will be in the center, the only stone on the necklace.

Back to the ship. Dropped off everything and then had dinner at Garden Café. Afterwards, we went back to cabin to relax before the evening show.

Comedy Showtime -- The Second City -- very entertaining. Most of their improv was well done. Audience participation was included.

Alison called to let me know that she made reservations for 6 tomorrow at the Indigo Restaurant. She stopped by with David, etc., to drop off David’s batteries. I didn’t know they were coming by so had already undressed for bed. I went into the bathroom so Steve could answer the door. I was wondering how long I would be there… fortunately, not too long.

Tomorrow -- Glacier Bay
Rangers will begin at 7AM. I’m planning to go listen so ordered breakfast room service. The main reason I decided to come on the NCL Pearl was because they include Glacier Bay in the route. (The NCL Star doesn’t.)

Tuesday, May 19 -- Up Early and a Beautiful, Busy Day

After a good night’s sleep, I woke up about 6:30AM and decided to go to both the 7AM “Early Morning Stretching” and 7:30AM “Total Body Conditioning Class,” not realizing that I would be doing LOTS of stretching. Whew!

After a quick shower and breakfast (bagels and smoked salmon, herring, and a small amount of scrambled eggs for me) at the Garden Café. Steve returned to the cabin and I left to attend Jenna’s “Juneau and Diamonds” Seminar. She gave out certificates for free umbrellas to redeem in Juneau. The seminar was very interesting, with useful information about what to look for when purchasing diamonds.

The sky was clear and it was sunny as we cruised on our way to Juneau. Beautiful scenery just waiting for me to take pictures so we went outside. It was windy, but not too cold. We stopped by the Garden Café for a mid-morning snack of fresh fruit. Stopped by the Atrium for the end of the “Art Seminar – 30K Years of Art History.” When we stopped back at the room, there were messages from David and Alison, so we stopped by the Blue Lagoon (where they were planning to have lunch) to see them. We had our lunch at the Garden Café (salad and some Indian food for me) and then back to the cabin to organize for our shore time.

The ship arrived early (1:00PM) at Juneau but we remained out in the water, waiting until the NCL Star departed so we could dock where they had been. No one minded since it was so nice out and great for taking pictures.

When we docked, most people left their cabins for going ashore. It didn’t take too long (room card had to be passed through security computer). We boarded a free shuttle bus for the 1-mile trip to downtown shopping area. The rep from the “Blue Glacier Express” tour company was there and gave us our “tickets” we had reserved. After we boarded the 2:30PM bus, I called Evan (from my cell phone), while we waited to leave. Arrived at the Mendenhall Glacier area at 3PM. Paid $3 per person for the Visitor Center, watched the film and looked at displays in the Center.

We walked down to the pathway for the exceptional view of the glacier. Stunning! It was interesting (and a bit upsetting) to hear how quickly the glacier has been receding. We spoke with one of the park rangers before going back to the Visitor Center to read more of the info displayed. As we were walking to the bus area, we briefly saw Alison, Ben, and Ed, as they were on their way up. We caught the 5PM bus back to town.

Our first stop there was to pick up the free 1ct Sapphire at Venetian Jewelers. We went to Diamonds International so I could get my free charm bracelet, $5 Juneau collectible charm, and free umbrella. The salesman asked us if were interested in anything special. Steve mentioned gold charms but they didn’t have anything that I could add to my necklace. Steve asked about seeing Crown of Light diamond jewelry (90 facets instead of the usual 57-58 of most diamonds). I wanted to get diamond stud earrings so we looked at some of those. One pair stood out from the rest as I tried them on. The salesman gave us a “ballpark” price and we then spoke with the manager. (Jenna had given me a $150 discount form and a VIP card.) The manager gave us a good price so we decided to make the purchase. He asked me if I’d like to see “something just for fun.” The ring he showed me was amazing. Steve’s words: “Some rings shout; this one sings.” After discussion about price, we decided to buy it for my birthday. (Ring instead of a trip – OKAY with me!) He showed me a bracelet but we decided to pass on that. They gave me an extra charm bracelet after Steve pointed out that the charm had “DI” on it just like my name. Both the earrings and ring are beautiful.

We went into Del Sol, a store where everything they sell changes color after being exposed to ultra violet light (sunlight). I spent $10 (2 mini husky keychains) so received a free tote bag.

Back to the ship, via the shuttle bus. Dinner at the Garden Café and then to the 9:15PM show “Sea Legs, A Showgirl Revue.” After the show we saw and spoke to Alison and Edward. (Ben had fallen asleep so was with David.)

David called and stopped by our cabin with batteries for charging. Shared our day’s experiences and then settled in for the night.

Tomorrow we’ll be in Skagway. We have no tours planned so will stroll around the town. Temperature is supposed to be in the 60s again.

Monday, May 18 -- Awake Early and Busy Day

After not sleeping too well, partly due to the motion of the ship (wore my nausea bands to bed), I got up early to go to a 7:30 AM Body Conditioning Class in the Fitness Center. Had a good workout and felt good afterward. Planning to go the tomorrow session, too. I wanted to go on the treadmill, too, but none were available. Some people were there by 6AM and didn’t adhere to the 30-minute maximum use time.

We all had breakfast in the Summer Palace Restaurant, again with very slow service. The waiter was very nice, doing his best to get us our food in a reasonable time. After eating, Steve and I decided it was time to take a walk up on Deck 12. Brrr… was chilly and windy.

The fresh air was invigorating. We followed up with a nice hot cup of cappuccino. (Yes, again…) Steve ate a small amount from the Great Outdoors buffet. Then it was time for lunch. The big joke onboard has been is that it’s always time to eat. (I’ve done my best to be selective about what and how much I eat, but may have overdone it today.) I had salad and some Indian food at the Garden Café.

After a short stop back at our cabin to drop off jackets and make a quick “pit stop,” we walked down to Deck 6 to the Stardust Theater to attend the “Alaska Port & Shopping Talk.” Jenna gave a very informative talk, with pointers about deals while in all our ports of call. She also gave me a special discount coupon in case I decide to purchase alexandrite (my birthstone) at one of the shops in Skagway. Good deals with no sales tax (absorbed by vendors). I’m definitely looking forward to some serious shopping.

We returned to our cabin. Steve took a nap and I headed back to Deck 7 to attend Jenna’s next session “Juneau & Gemstones Talk.” She repeated info about Juneau for people who were unable to attend the first session and handed out some other info sheets and freebie info. I didn’t stay for the whole session. Went back to the cabin, relaxed, and later Steve and I took another walk outside. By the time we finished (brrr…) at about 4PM, we decided to check out the Blue Lagoon, an eatery open 24 hours. Their menu has assorted “comfort food” with average portions. I ate the artichoke/spinach dip with tortilla chips (yummy), half of a tuna melt sandwich, and mashed potatoes. Steve had veggie lasagna and followed up with some NY cheesecake with blueberries. I had a couple of bites. (Excellent)

Back to the room for relaxation. Steve started watching a movie. (There’s a schedule of movies on 2 TV channels. Good choices.) I arranged to meet Alison, etc., at Indigo Restaurant at 7PM for dinner, but there was a 30-minute wait for admittance (no tables available), so we went back to Summer Palace. It was lobster (tail) night. After a small asparagus/green bean/tiny scallops appetizer, I ate 3 lobster tails with veggies. I wasn’t “planning” to have dessert, but ate a lo-cal chocolate mousse cake. (Delicious!)

Evening show in Stardust Theater -- 9:15PM Comedy Show with David Naster – very funny. Laughed a lot.

We had to turn our watches back for time change, so we get an extra hour of sleep. (Yay!)

Tomorrow – Juneau and the Mendenhall glacier. Weather forecast is for 65.

Sunday, May 17 -- Boarding and Getting Acclimated

After an early breakfast, we packed and checked our email on the Netbook. After hearing a knock on the door, I opened it and was greeted by a smiling Benjamin. So nice when he ran to me and gave me a hug. He ran from one room to the other, having a great time.

Shortly after we went down to the lobby with the suitcases, the van driver arrived. Smooth ride to Pier 66 and helpful luggage person. As we entered the building, we were handed papers to fill out concerning our health. Not a big surprise that there is an increased concern about flu symptoms considering the recent Mexico swine flu situation. I wonder how many people answer truthfully, knowing that if you indicate you have any symptoms that they might not let them board the ship.
Why didn’t they include the question “Did you kiss a pig recently?” My answers could have been “I don’t know any pigs to kiss” or “It’s my business who I decide to kiss.”

Since Alison is a Latitudes member (more than once on NCL), we went in a special line. Boarded the ship very quickly. We were handed a glass of champagne (non-drinkers can have OJ) and then went to the elevators to go to our cabin on Deck 10. Steve and I took our suitcases so didn’t have to wait. (At 6 PM David’s suitcase hadn’t yet arrived at his cabin. I don’t know when it arrived. I’m sure we’ll hear more about it tomorrow.) When we entered the cabin, I took pictures (of course) before anything disturbed the initial look. The beds were pushed together but I didn’t want it that way. Much too crowded in the small space. I asked one of the cabin attendants if he could separate them later. (What a difference that made.) Not too bad with space for hanging clothing (more hangers than I’ve ever seen even in a hotel!) and drawer/shelf space. Bathroom is larger than I expected.)

Lunch --- at the Garden Café on Deck 12. Good choice for us. It was crowded since many people couldn’t get into their rooms until 2PM. With all the food available at the buffet, it would be very easy to overeat. I’m going to do my best to not do that. (Wonder I long I’ll maintain my resolve…)

Boat Drill (MANDATORY) – Donning our lifejackets, we joined most passengers at the Stardust Theater for info about emergency procedures. They checked us in and said that anyone who wasn’t there would have to attend another drill tomorrow morning.

During the afternoon, we checked out many of the public areas on Decks 12-14 and Deck 7. Browsed in the shops (bought a hat in one shop) and purchased the picture they took of us when we arrived on the ship. I decided to buy the one of David, Ben, Alison, and Edward, as a gift for Alison. She said she wasn’t thrilled with how she looked in the pic (Sounded like something I often say about my pic), but was appreciative. I told her it’s a special momento of the cruise.) We had some cappuccino and a frozen yogurt (Not at the same time!)

Dinner --- Summer Palace Deck 7 --- Beautifully decorated, inspired by Catherine the Great’s Summer Palace (We visited there last year when we were in St. Petersburg). Wait Staff was friendly but food took a very long time to arrive. The restaurant wasn’t crowded so it shouldn’t have taken so long. A lot of choice for dinner. I had 2 appetizers (smoked salmon and shrimp cocktail) and mahi-mahi. For dessert, I ate a coconut cheesecake (low calorie) and drank a cappuccino. Food tasted good, but not exceptional. The menu is different each day so I’ll try something different tomorrow.

Evening Entertainment -- “Welcome Aboard Show” in the Stardust Theater. Arrived there about 8:20 and found 2 seats in the center, a distance up from the stage, with an excellent view. Good intro of performers and entertaining dancers. Tomorrow night we’ll go to see the comedian’s show.

Back to room about 9:40 and decided to end our day of activities. I’ve looked at tomorrow’s FULL SCHEDULE and highlighted what I’d like to do. (Can’t change my organized nature even when I’m on vacation.) Steve gave me a good laugh when he pointed out that “they say we shouldn’t be concerned about watching the clock while on vacation. How can we not do that when so much is scheduled at a particular time?”

More tomorrow…

Saturday in Seattle

Wow! Amazing weather... sunny and in 70s. Thanks, Barb, for ordering it for us!

Breakfast at the hotel (Fairfield Inn, SEA-TAC) was good with a lot of choice. Amazing how some hotels have a very limited choice for their FREE continental breakfast. This hotel has waffles, cereal, bagels, bread choices, pastries, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, bananas, apples, juices, coffee/tea. I ate an egg, cereal with yogurt, banana, and tea. Good for me.

After breakfast and back to room for shower/dress, we walked down the hill to a Seven 11 for some bottles of juice and popcorn for evening snack.

David, Alison, Ben, and Edward arrived at hotel about 1:15. They couldn't get into their room so left their luggage (a lot of it) in our room.

We took the hotel shuttle to the airport and a bus to a stop across from Westlake Shopping Center. We didn't have to pay for the bus -- happened because we had entered the bus from back and after arriving at our stop, Alison went to driver to pay but he said it was ok. Hmmm... He probably was shocked that people would be so honest so decided to let it go. So... free rides from hotel into city.

A short walk to Pike Place Market and opportunity to get samples at the Cheese Festival. Good amount for a light lunch.

We walked back to Westlake and ate at the Food Court. Good choices there. Steve and I had fish/veggies in bowls (instead of wraps)and shared a smoothie.

We walked a few blocks to get on bus to take us back to airport. Paid $1.75 each person for that ride. David put in $1 bill and was going to put the coins in, but that driver told him it was OK. Go figure...

At airport didn't have to wait for a shuttle -- perfect timing -- back to hotel.

We moved luggage into the adjoining room. Ben liked being able run from one room to the other. When it was bathtime for him, we said goodnight and closed the connecting doors.

We're taking a private shuttle to the pier in the morning, costing us only $11 each. Such a deal.

Not sure when I'll be able to upload my blog entries next time. I'll write an entry each day and upload them when I can.

Ellenville to Seattle

After only about 3 hours of sleep (Just couldn't seem to fall asleep but Steve did.), I was up with time to make sure I had everything needed for the trip. Left home at 8:45 this morning... actually yesterday morning according to Seattle time...

Drive to LaGuardia, very uneventful. When were checking in our bags, we found out the flight was delayed about an hour. Since it was only 11 and flight wasn't going to be leaving until 1:45, we decided to stroll through the shops (bought nothing) and sit at the food court to eat the salad, etc. I brought for out. Had to buy drinks only. Headed to gate area. First time we had to deal with taking a computer through security. Steve took it out and added it to one of the containers that would go through the xray machine. He was told that he should use a SEPARATE bin just for a computer. Our little Acer Netbook all by itself in a container. Something new we learned on this trip.

At the gate area we found out we would be delayed even longer. This was one of the times I was happy that we had a later flight leaving Atlanta, not the usual one hour layover. So, instead of sitting in Hartsfield Airport for about 3 hours, we sat longer at LaGuardia. Many flights were delayed due to heavy rains in the south and Midwest areas. Since we were in Business Class (upgrade using our points) we boarded first, sat comfortably, and were offered drinks. Had OJ only but later on the flight drank a Baileys on the Rocks (free in BC). Snacks were plentiful but no meals as is the usual for domestic flights.

Flight to Atlanta was smooth, arriving more than an hour before our next flight. We bought sandwiches at a place similar to Panera Bread.

Flight to Seattle was good, for the most part. Some turbulence but I slept through most of it. Watched part of The Butterfly Effect movie on the Netbook until the battery ran out of juice. Decided not to change batteries so will see the end at another time. Steve put about 5 movies on an SD card so I'll have more choice during this trip.

After arrival as Seattle, we had to deal with BAGGAGE CLAIM. Even though we didn't have to pay for checking the bags (BC again...), it was not a pleasant experience to wait for the bags. There was a jam in the baggage machine while people from TWO flights waited at the carousel. We always say it's so much better to carry on the bags. Walk off the plane and go directly out of the airport. Oh, well. On the way home, we'll carry on as usual.

We easily found the area to call for the airport shuttle and arrived at the hotel about 11:15 PM (2:15 AM -- Saturday, NY time.

It's been a LONG DAY.

Tomorrow, after David, Alison, Ben, and Edward arrive, we'll go to Pikes Place Market and enjoy the 70s degree temperature.

Norwegian Pearl

There was a special on TV recently about cruises. They featured the Norwegian Pearl, showing all areas of the ship. Some of it is on the website http://www.cnbc.com/id/29139914?__source=vty|cruiseinc|&par=vty . Yesterday, Steve and I met the cameramen because they were in Ellenville to film another documentary. Ship looks really nice. I'll take many pictures when we're there but know I'll never be allowed in the "behind the scenes" areas.

Since we reserved and paid in advance, we were "upgraded" from Deck 4 to Deck 10. Cabin is the same (inner) but costs more. I can't figure that out. No window, both inner, same size... We're 2 levels down from the Exercise Room so that's a good thing. I'm planning to go there each morning with Alison. I'm much better about exercising when I am "accountable' to another person.

Email while on the cruise

I read that they have Internet service available but doubt we'll use it. Not sure if they give a deal for using our own computer.

Emails can be sent to us at
DKRULICK10011@PEARL.cruisemail.net

Good that I don't have to remember that one!

When we get to port, we might go to an Internet Cafe to check our email.

Shore Excursions

One word for them ... overcharging.

We decided to book only ONE from the cruise line and a bus reservation from an Alaska vendor and just "wing it" for other places.

We're all going on the Ketchikan Duck Tour. I've always wanted to take one of these. Saw them in Dublin and Seattle, and know many other places have them. Should be fun. Hope the weather is good.

We had booked a tour in Juneau to see the Mendenhall Glacier. Cost was $45 per person. David found a local vendor that had bus for $14 per person (plus $3 each for Visitor Center) so I cancelled the costly one.

Steve and I like to do more on our own and not have to book too much in advance.

Nothing planned yet for Skagway but will have time there to decide to do something if we want. Looks like it's good walking place. We'll be in Victoria for evening only so will take a walk. Since we were there last year with Barb and Ron, we're not so concerned about seeing much. Might have gone to the Gardens but not enough time to truly enjoy it.

Most important... pictures...and lots of them, as usual.

Almost time to leave

Needed errands done. Sean is at the kennel (Miss him already), dropped off Mail Hold at Post Office, House Watch at Police Department, got cash from ATM, and keys to Stan for pickup at LaGuardia when we return.

Went on AirTran site to get boarding pass and saw they were offering, for a cost, upgrades to Business Class. I thought that was strange since when I called just after midnight, someone from AirTran told me there were no seats available to use our points. Decided to call again, just to check, and was told YES there were seats so we're flying Business Class for 2 flights tomorrow. No charge for checking bags when in Business Class so decided to check them. We're taking the Netbook with loaded-in movies so that's good. We're sitting next to each other so will use the plug that lets us plug in both our earphones. No competing for watching a movie. On the trip back home we'll both be in aisle seats but that's okay since it's the Red Eye so we'll both probably sleep.

My not putting everything into the suitcase worked out as a good idea since now I can pack the liquids and not have to squeeze them into the quart size bag. On the way home, most containers will be empty so they can be in the carry-on.

Not sure if I'll get to upload anything while we're on the cruise but I'll write each day anyway. Probably will upload when we get to Barb's house. Should be interesting to see how this works out.

Trying out the Netbook

When we go on the cruise, I'm planning to take our new Acer Netbook. It's small but very powerful. No idea about using it with the wireless onboard. I might decide to just write my blog entries and then publish them after the trip. Have to see how much it will cost to use the wireless. We've never taken a;computer with us other than our PDAs so this will be interesting. I want to keep a journal and it's much easier for me to type than to write it out longhand. I know people do that but I type much faster and then I won't have to "keyboard" everything after the trip. Good, too, that this computer has a slot for memory cards so I can add pictures to my blogs. Amazing how far technology has come!

Planning the trip

I've always wanted to go to Alaska. I remember when my dad returned from his trip (many years ago) and told me how beautiful it was. Alison told me she was interested in taking an Alaska cruise. I was already planning to go to Seattle to visit Barb and Ron so thought I could combine that with a cruise. Unfortunately, Barb and Ron can't join us.

I filled out a form o
n Norwegian Cruise Line's website. Today a rep called me, asking when I might be interested in going. At first, I made a reservation for June but changed it after Alison said they (Alison, David, and Edward) preferred to go in May to save money. It's a big savings so that makes a lot of sense. Since Benjamin is only 1, Alison doesn't have to pay much for him to go, too.

So, I made a deposit for the cruise for Steve and me. I have to make air arrangements via AirTran since Steve and I will use vouchers we have from our "bum" last return trip from Seattle. We'll also need hotel reservations for the night before departure. Good night sleep before departure will work out well for us.
